Functions of DGICCE

The Directorate has not been vested with any statutory powers under the Customs Act or the Central Excise Act. CBR Memo. F.NO. 22(16)Ad.II(G) 51 dated 27.12.1952 lays down the scope and the functions of this Directorate in supersession of earlier Memo. C.No. 1350-Ad.CX.48 dated 23.11.48.


To study the working of the Customs ,Central excise
   & Narcotics Departmental  machinery throughout the
   country.

To suggest measures for improvement of its efficiency
   and rectification of important    defects in it through
   inspection and by laying down procedures for smooth
   functioning.

To carry out inspection to determine whether the
   working of the field formations are as    per Customs &
   central excise procedures , and to make
   recommendations in respect to the procedural flaws ,
   if any noticed.

To suggest measures for improvement in functioning of
   the field formations.

Each Customs Commissionerate is to be inspected atleast
   once a year, and each Central Excise Commissionerate is
   to be inspected once in two years.

The Director of Legal Affairs, Director of Housing & Welfare,
   Director of Organization & Personnel Management and
   Director of Publicity & Public Relations would report to
   Director General of Inspection.
